HAIR STYLES
This was sent to me via mailing list a few years ago, and I thought it might be useful for those still in the process of finalising their character's appearance. Generally, a person's hair style and/or hair color says a lot about them. Particularly in manga and anime, certain stereotypes can be attached to your character without you even realising. To this end, I've written up this guide based on the information from the previously mentioned mailing list. Remember that this is only a stereotypical guideline - they are not laws and you don't have to follow them to the letter. by Angel LONG HAIR Females with long hair are generally very feminine, and usually rather beautiful. Not to say that other females aren't, but in examples for princesses, models and other famous / idolised people, more often than not they will have long hair. There are several subcategories depending on how the hair is styled:
[top] SHOULDER LENGTH
Girls with shoulder length hair usually have a very balanced personality. They are not overly feminine or overly tomboy-ish. Fairly mature, they give off a sophisticated air, but can sometimes be shy. There are less differences in personality between different hairstyles of this length. These females generally do fairly well in class/work, without being the top of the class (unless other factors are involved, such as glasses, etc.)
[top] VERY SHORT
As you'd no doubt guess, females with short hair are generally tomboys, very business orientated, or into sports. These girls occasionally have tempers - the tomboys, anyway - but can also be very serious and very mature. Girls with short hair aren't very feminine in nature, though they can still be as pretty as any other girl. It is often a lack of time that causes girls to have short haircuts, so you characters should be fairly busy in some way.
[top] ADDITIONAL STYLINGS As well as having hair of a certain length, characters often style their hair in a particular fashion. Particular traits can be associated with each style, including:
[top] MALES While not as often the otaku senshi, we still all need our males. Whether as the love interest, the best friend, the relative, or even a Tuxedo Kamen or other male hero, the hairstyle chosen for your male can be just as telling to your audience. LONG FLOWING HAIR Males with longer hair are generally thought of as being wild and sexy. Nearly always the ultimate bishounen, these males walk a fine line between gorgeous and feminine - and we love them for it. These males are often "bad boys", or have a very protective instinct regarding a certain female around them. Loose hair generally fits this style more than long hair that is tied back, but it can cross into it as well.
[top] SHOULDER LENGHT These guys are often the more romantic type. Almost but not quite blending into the personality types of the longer-haired males, these males can be downright evil, or - at the opposite end - the heroes of the story. These males are quite violent and are very skilled at fighting. However, they have their softer sides, but usually only around their significant other.
[top] SHORT HAIR The most common style for males, short hair is therefore the most difficult to define any set character traits for. This style can be used to suggest that the male is an ordinary male, sometimes also linked with business-orientated males. But most often, the male's personality is then dependant on additonal stylings. ADDITIONAL STYLINGS
[top] COLOR And last, but certainly not least, an additional set of personality traits are linked with the color of your character's hair. Hmm, I'm not sure if I agree with all these, but then again, this is a much broader topic than styles...
